What tests do you need to take to apply for an MBA?

In applying for an MBA, you will need to take several tests which include the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). Schools put great value on these tests hence, it’s important that you prepare for it well to get above satisfactory scores. Before taking these tests, you may need to review well by yourself or enroll in organizations that offer coaching and review.

The GMAT is a standardized test developed by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) to evaluate the skills of applicants to an MBA and other management programs. It measures the analytical and verbal skills of an individual. The test is in English and done through the computer with three main sections – analytical writing, quantitative and verbal sections. Previously, it was a written test but now, it is available only in a computerized format.

The GMAT usually serves as a screening tool for the top applicants qualified for an MBA program. At the time of the interview, you may be given group tests or exercises. You will be asked to something and observed. A business school looks for a balanced personality including your leadership abilities, how you make decisions, form views, listen to and support other people.

Your score in the GMAT is an important consideration in your application to an MBA program at a top business school. Even though you may have an extensive work experience and a good undergraduate GPA but your GMAT score is unsatisfactory, you may difficulty getting a slot in the program. If your score is within the required median 80 percent range of a certain school, there’s a good chance that you will be admitted. This score requirement is now printed in the brochures of MBA programs.

Another test you will be required is the psychometric tests or better known as personality tests. It is normally done at the time of the interview. You will not know what kind of test will be used in this category and you probably can’t prepare for them. However, just to have an idea, you may research on the Internet about personality tests and try some of them. You can also consult university career officers and career guidance organizations about this kind of test. You can likewise try answering a book of personality or aptitude tests. The TOEFL tests an applicant’s English proficiency. Schools require this test before you can be admitted to their MBA programs. The minimum scores required, however, may differ in schools. There are also other institutions that let successful applicants to take additional tests in English during the orientation phase and before regular classes begin. If, for instance, the practical test result does not corroborate the student’s TOEFL scores, he or she may be required to attend more English classes prior to enrolling to the program.
