What exactly is an MBA?
MBA refers to Masters in Business Administration, a post graduate degree focusing on business communication. It is a popular degree around the world pursued by people holding executive and managerial posts. The degree has been proven valuable by those in business and administration. Among the many countries with world-class academic institutions, the United States has been the most sought after place for pursuing an MBA degree because of its rigid training and education system.
The MBA degree and program were first introduced in the United States in the early 1900s. Getting an MBA in a top business school in the U.S. is recognized worldwide. This is the reason why many students from foreign countries prefer to pursue their MBA in the U.S. despite the fact that institutions in their own country also offer an MBA program. In Europe, the MBA program was developed much later in the 1960s.
An MBA program usually lasts for two years which American educators believe is the appropriate length of time for students to gain extensive knowledge on business and administration. In Europe, however, the normal duration of the program is only one year. There are cases also that the degree can be obtained in only ten months.
Since its introduction in the 1900s, the MBA program has experienced a lot of changes. The current trend of shorter program duration (less than two years) came about due to a stiff competition in the education sector. Another factor that contributed to this is geared towards making the program less costly without taking for granted the quality and value of the MBA degree. Pursuing an MBA is very expensive and those with meager funds despite their great qualifications may encounter financial hardships along the way.
An important development seen is the introduction of different types of MBA programs not limited to the business field. In its long years of existence, taking the course had always been full-time. Although the full time program is considered the standard one, a growing number of MBA students now prefer to take part time and distance learning courses which provide more flexibility and convenience. At present, you can either enroll in a part time program as well as modular, international, distance learning and online programs.
Each year, approximately 80,000 MBA graduates hit the job market in the U.S. alone while the U.K. records some 11,000. Although graduates of top business schools do have an edge in attracting potential employers, those who can prove their expertise in their chosen fields can also gain employment in top management positions with better salaries. Experts believe that an MBA holder’s experience and maturity matter the most and not mainly from which school or what program you graduated.
