How much does it cost to get an MBA?
Pursuing an MBA is quite expensive so make sure that you know the costs before applying. The school fees are actually just part of the overall costs. It is admirable if you are spending your own personal funds in pursuing your post-graduate study. Good also if your company is the one shouldering the expenses as part of their training program for the advancement of their employees. Should you be worried about funds, some schools offer scholarships and financial assistance so better check them as early as possible.
If you are targeting to apply to a top business school, expect the cost to be more than the average salary in the United States and the United Kingdom. The cost, however, is equivalent also to great benefits or what we call value for money. The average cost for an MBA degree is $40,000 for one year or $80,000 for two years. Some programs cost $60,000 for just one year. If the fee is lower than those mentioned, then don’t expect to get a good MBA education. Academic experts agree that the more costly an MBA is, the better education you get. They add that the high cost of an MBA only signifies the quality of education you get and the high regard given to you by employers.
Apart from the tuition fee, there are many other costs involved. For instance, if you are pursuing a full-time study, it would cost you a lot for not working for one year or two years based on the course you have chosen. Since it’s full-time, you won’t be able to work while studying which translates to lost salary as well. Even if it’s just part-time study, you may need to work only for four days a week with one workday’s salary lost.
Traveling cost is another important consideration is you have chosen to pursue an MBA degree on campus. If you’re commuting, you need to pay for the public transport such as a train or bus or petrol. If you’re using your car, you may need to pay for the parking fee on campus. If you come from another country and opted to study in the U.S., you may need to rent a room or apartment with friends near the business school. And of course, if you plan to go home and see your family and relatives once in a while, you may need to pay for your flights to and from your place or study.
During the course of your study, you may also need to buy a laptop to enable you to work on your assignments and projects in your own pace, time and location. In this way, you won’t need to depend on the school’s computer system all the time. Text books will also be an additional expense and each course might require you to buy at least one book. However, if you know of some alumni or bookstores that sell second-hand books, you may be able to get a cheaper price. Just make sure that the one you’re buying is not the oldest edition.
