Applying for an MBA program: What you need and what you should emphasize.
The first step is to completely fill up an application form which should be clean and neat. It’s best that you make several photocopies of the blank form and fill out a number of drafts before accomplishing the copy which you will submit to the school. Have someone, not acquainted to you, review your application form to find out if it’s already good enough for submission. The form is equally important if you are applying to a school in another country. If, for instance, an interview is needed, request for an interview over the telephone and/or by the school’s local alumnus.
Another requirement is the resume or curriculum vitae (CV). It should be neat and printed from a computer. The document should clearly provide a detailed information about yourself and what you have done, learned and accomplished. Specify also your managerial and leadership skills and abilities especially those that make you a cut above the rest. Take time to make a good resume to show your seriousness in applying at your chosen school.
Submitting a well-written essay about yourself is another plus. The essay tests your writing ability hence, it should be well-structured and written in correct grammar, spelling and syntax. Specify your strengths and acknowledge your weaknesses which you would like to improve by pursuing an MBA degree. Explain how you can be an asset to the program and the school as well. Freely express your views on certain topics suggested by the school, if possible according to the order it specified. Follow their rules on line spacing, margins and word limit.
Letters of recommendation or references will also be asked so be sure to choose the right people who can provide good reviews about you. You can pick the people whom you know – a former college professor or former boss. Ask them beforehand and explain to them your requirement. It’s best that you meet them and provide them with a copy of your completed application form and resume to serve as their guide in making the recommendation letter. Don’t forget to thank them after getting their letters.
A transcript of record from the school where you finished your undergraduate or any other graduate degree is also a vital document. If you attended several schools in the past, you should secure them as early as possible. Many schools will only accept written requests for a transcript so you may need to visit the school yourself to get your copy.
After submitting the documents, you will have to take several tests such as the GMAT and TOEFL. You can review by yourself or enroll in some organizations that offer coaching and review. You can try to do some sample tests offered on the Internet or purchase some of these from bookstores. The GMAT is normally done to screen the best applicants qualified for an MBA program.
The interview is the final and critical step so it’s important to be prepared. Think about the possible questions you may be asked and your answers. Avoid memorizing some answers because they may not sound natural during the actual interview. The interviewer would like to see your natural self and how you would contribute to the program. Don’t forget to dress right and be early in going to the venue. Show the interviewer that you are well informed about the school and their MBA program so take time to research beforehand.
